Have you considered using MAPublisher 4.0 for the creation of your maps
in Illustrator 9.0. I would like to invite you to have a look through

You will find that you are able to get your maps much smaller in terms of
file sizes if you create your PDF's from Illustrator instead of from images
from Photoshop (e.g. Vector data is always smaller than Raster).

You will see some samples of what people are doing with MAPublisher 4.0.

Although few people are taking advantage of this tool yet, PDFPlus which is
a free plug-in for Acrobat will allow you to retain attributes in your PDF
file
from GIS data, people can then query your maps provided they have PDFPlus
loaded on their machine. You could always delivery PDFPlus with your data,
or
provide a link from your website.

Hi everybody,

my name is Erik and I'm new to this list. So excuse me if I bring up an
old topic (I've been searching the archives, though.)

I wonder if some of you expierenced people can throw some light over
this problem:

I make maps (mostly cities) in PDF-format for the web. File size is
crucial.
Say, I've got a Photoshop file 17x17 cm (6.7"x6.7") at 170 dpi. I save
as EPS and import it into InDesign where I add text - streets etc. This
file I save as an EPS which I process through Distiller (settings: 170
dpi, max JPEG compression).

The resulting file size: appr. 1 Mb.

Now, if I make my original Photoshop file bigger i.e. 17x17cm but 300
dpi resolution instead, than go through exactly the same procedure and
settings - the resulting PDF file adds up to only 350 Kb.

Isn't this strange - the bigger the original file, the smaller the
resulting PDF? Someone encountered this before?

Any tips on how to further reduce file size?

I work on Mac G3, 233 Mhz, MacOS 8.5, PS 5.5, Acrobat 4.04, InD 1.5.

I'll be most grateful for any tips and explanations.
