RE: PDF from word without text reflow? (Word97 vs. earlier releases)
[In addition to the issues raised by Dov Isaacs and others]
The original question did not specify which version of Microsoft Word was being used.
There is a difference between Word 97 and earlier versions of Word with regard to the use of printer driver metrics. Word 97 does not use printer driver font metrics by default, and therefore no changes will occur in line/page breaks after switching to a different printer driver. Word 6/7 documents opened in Word 97 will, however, keep using driver-specific metrics (so as to minimize changes in the transition from earlier releases to Word 97). To turn off the dependency on driver-specific metrics in such documents, in Tools>Options, click the Compatibility tab, and uncheck the "Use printer metrics to lay out document" option.
[ Not as implied in one or two messages in this thread, line breaks in FrameMaker are not "immune" against printer driver changes ]
