The best result would be to use you Opi (open Press interface) system to downsize the files on the fly replacing all high res images with 72 dpi samples when making the postscript, then distill with Maximum compression.
If your going to do it through distiller use 72dpi downsampling on all images and maximum jpeg compression on colour and grayscale images , maximum zip compression on mono images as well as compressing text and line art. You should also make sure that you have sellected optomize pdf and that you embed subsets. (Also Make sure that you do not use ASCII)
