Anne-Marie,
on Mac, the application on the volume the file is will be used first. Which
means, if you have a Reader on the CD, it will be used when the user double
clicks the document. When an Acrobat application is already open, a file
will be opened there, no matter what is on the CD (this last one is also
valid for Windows).
On Windows, (I guess) it will use the application which is assigned to the
file extension, which can be anywhere on the system. In order to force the
Reader on the CD, an autorun script is normally used.
So, if your CD has Reader installed open, calling the "home.pdf" would be
sufficient on the Mac. On Windows, you would have to call Reader on the CD
and ask to open "home.pdf".
Hope, this can help.

Play with the color mode of the images before importing them into Quark and
the Job Options color settings for the Distiller.
For instance, I usually get reliable results with making all imported images
CMYK in Photoshop (even for Screen jobs which, I admit, is
counter-intuitive) and setting Color for "Leave Color Unchanged."

Anne-Marie ,
The instructions are very Win-centric but are easily adaptable to
Macs. The author found great limitations with the available Windows
software to make a cross-platform CD, hence the write-up.
The data that applied to us (and I thought would be helpful to you)
was how to burn a CD w/ Acrobat Readers for both platforms w/o having
either screw up (the compiled appendices are a huge time saver). The
actual task is not difficult on a Mac (took very little time after
reading the instructions & downloading the readers). The time
consuming part was finding the assortment of PCs with the different
OS versions for testing.
We decided to go this route because we realized many power users
loath installing new software to read anyone's catalogs or brochures.
We found a sizable percentage of our customers have a mind-numbing
list of personal & administrative reasons for not "upgrading"
software. Forcing them to do so was not the way to keep their favor.
This solution allowed us to make sure _everyone_ (we made a point to
include "how to" instructions for other platform users [Linux, etc.]
as well) could read and search the catalog regardless of their
installed software, level of sophistication, or personal preferences.
Good luck,
Dave Cavner
