I can tell you that we use PageMaker to create instruction books and generate PDF files using the "export" command versus the "print" (to file) command. One of the main reasons that I do not have the export feature automatically distill is for twofold; one being that my film service provider prefers to have the postscript file instead of the PDF file, and two, I got tired of losing all work when my machine crashed during the distill process. Crashing actually happened frequently which meant that 20 or so minutes of exporting work went down the drain as the postscript file is trashed during this process.
I can't say why I had performance problems (since I do not maintain this workstation), but after about the third time (I'm a little slow) of losing a file that was in the distill process and having to start over, I just generate postscript and then distill manually. This way, I can also distill a print optimized version, a screen optimized version, etc., all from the same postscript. When I'm done, I can just trash the postscript file.
