If your Word files are laid out for printing by a PostScript printer (remember the layout of a Word document changes depending on your default printer), one simple way if you are just concatenating the chapters (i.e. no Table of contents etc) is to output each chapter to a PostScript file and then use MSDOS e.g.
copy /b chp01.ps+chp02.ps+chp03.ps book.ps
and then distill book.ps to create your PDF.
Unless your chapters are small I would avoid the Word Master Document feature like the plague as it is broke (see any of the Word discussion groups). There are various publicly available macros or the use of Word RD-fields if you need to do bring the Word chapters together before creating PostScript.
