Jeff Martin, Senior Director of Worldwide Design & Publishing at Apple, gave a presentation at Gutenberg Expo '98 (May, '98 in Long Beach, CA) where he delineated the "Four Pillars" of publishing from Apple's point of view: QuickTime, ColorSync, AppleScript, WebObjects.
These are NOT platform specific technologies. Given Microsoft's investment in Apple and Apple's survival instincts, they can't be.
He specificly mentioned presentations of ColorSync he made to Microsoft's development teams and their appreciation of it as a cross-platform standard for addressing color issues. When and how it will be implemented remains to be seen. Microsoft has licensed LinoColorCMMM Technology to improve color management in Windows and it is compatible with ColorSync (http://www.microsoft.com/corpinfo/press/1997/apr97/linopr.htm).
"With the LinoColorCMM as the default CMM, Windows-based applications that support ICM 2.0 will also be compatible with Macintosh applications that support LinoColorCMM-enabled ColorSync 2.0 (and later) technology from Apple Computer Inc., ensuring color consistency across Windows and Macintosh platforms."
