There is a host of possible reasons; some of them are:
- you didn't use the recommended printer driver /PPD combination to create your PDF. ON Win, this is using AdobePS 4.2.6 (in case of Acrobat 3.0x) or AdobePS 4.3.x (with Acrobat 4) and the Adistill.ppd (Acrobat 3) or Adist4.ppd (Acrobat 4). If you, for some reason, use another combination, make sure the printer's graphics resolution is at least set to 600 dpi (Hint: as FrameMaker prints through the standard GDI, the system recomputes the bitmaps to the graphics resolution the printer instance is configured for).
- you did select an improper compression method, e.g JPEG compression for graphics containing sharp edges etc. (JPEG is desinged for things like photographs).
- you did select unsuitable downsampling settings when distilling.
