The files are scientific papers. I estimate that we can expect upwards of 3Gb of original PostScript per month. Whilst the papers are not overly long (indeed some are only 2 pages) these papers have significant numbers of graphics tipped-in. And I have not even dared think about intra-document links yet because they only increase the work load.

Your right. Of course, if there were an OpenVMS version of distiller then we could utilise the "right hardware" that my client already has. Hardware that is used to collate, compose and otherwise process the original papers.
Of course, with 3Gb of original PostScript and probably 3Gb of PDF every month we can expect to wear out the single disk for the "watched directory" very quickly or to flood the network between the VAXes, which act as file servers, and the PC converting the files. (Gee, that was a real smart move Adobe to force the in and out directories onto the same physical device.)
