Here's a follow-up to my problems of a grayscale image dropping out when distilling a PageMaker PostScript file with Acrobat 4.0 (Win95).
I did some extensive testing this morning to isolate the problem and I'm getting close. This always works fine with Screen Optimized settings. It works OK with Press Optimized and Print Optimized if I print 100%. But if I print "Reduced to Fit" then the image drops out.
Rich Sprague suggested unchecking the "Preserve OPI Comments" in the Advanced setting under Job Options. But this had no effect.
This file came to me from a client to use as an ad in a newsletter I produce. I had no control over the original file. I know it was produced in Quark for the Mac. I have tried to reproduce this error with a test Quark file I created -- using both grayscale TIF and EPS images -- but to no avail. All my tests work OK with my own file.
It was also suggested to export the PDF to an EPS file and place that in PageMaker. I did that, but got the same results. The file is fine at 100%, but the grayscale image disappears in the Reduced to Fit version (both the PDF and EPS version.)
As stated previously, no poblems exist when distilled with Acrobat 3.02.
That's my workaround for now.
