Re: Japanese Font: PDF Solved/2 Questions
Bob & Dina; We were trying to embedd Japanes fonts (to make Japanes PDF docs readable on PCs with English Win95 + English Acrobat-Reader) and gave up. Thanks for Dina's solution and Bob's good summary. My Japanese editor is visiting Japan- so I'm in the dark...
But I have 2 questions: 1. Do these Japanese PDF docs print reasonably by English Acrobat-Reader under English Win95 on 300/600 DPI printers? 2. Currently we do not have a Japanese AdobePS Printer Driver installed on our PC with Win95-J/MSWord97-J/Acrobat-J. The Acrobat 3.0J CDROM has under Drivers folder both AdobePS 4.1J and AdobePS 4.2J. Which one you used/recommend ? (our Japanese docs are text-only).
Thanks in advance Zavdi_Lichtman@amat.com

My thanks to those of you who quickly responded to my query, including Dina Davidson, Steve Schwedland, Jonathan Bauer. I believe most of you saw the suggested solutions so let me outline what we did that worked for us.
We needed a single Japanese word placed into a warning label which could be sent to a vendor that makes our vinyl decals. While the one word was sufficient, it was my hope to find a solution that would enable us to do entire Japanese documents if that becomes necessary. (Toshi would like to do some translation work while he is here).
We could create a PDF files of the document which looked good but it was dependent upon the computer's font system. When that PDF file was opened on an English operating system we got an error message (mising font) and the Japanese word was missing.
Dina Davidson suggested that we set the printer driver to download the fonts as bitmaps. After some experimentation we got that to work.
1.) Access the PS Printer Driver (with someone who can read Japanese) and set it to download the fonts as bitmaps. 2.) Set that printer as the default printer. 3.) Open the application and appropriate file (we used FrameMakerJ). 4.) Print the file to the previously prepared PS Printer. Choose the option to print to file (don't SAVE AS PDF!). 5.) Select the directory you wish the PS file to go to and the file name (you may need to change .prn to .ps). 6.) When the PS file is created, load it into Acrobat Distiller. Distiller creates the PDF file. 7.) Copy the resulting PDF to a diskette or network drive and open it on an English OS computer. 8.) It should display the Japanese characters well. Whether they print well is not yet known.
Thanks to all, especially Dina. I appreciate your help.
Merry CHRISTmas
