Yes, I strongly suspect there is a memory leak in Acrobat Distiller v3.01.
I run Acrobat on Windows NT and we have the machine automatically reboot itself in the wee hours every day (how archaic!) just to overcome this problem. Left to its own devices, Acrobat Distiller Assistant seems to chew up all 125MB of real and virtual RAM over a three-day period, and the machine goes south!
If you're looking for tools that will allow an automatic shutdown and reboot for a Windows something-or-other machine, check the resource kit for your OS. For the macintosh, there's some shareware called "cron" or "mac-cron" but you'd have to search for it.
Best regards,
Brackett Tucker
