Dave: Dave:
Try using a Series 3 driver and sending the job again. We have an extensive collection of HP 4 (all varieties) family printers here, and the poor PCL drivers for the 4 series are usually at fault. Also set the driver so that job is sent as bit-map or as graphic, set the driver to raster rather than vector, and set dithering to fine. If you must stick with the 4 series PCL driver, drop resolution to 300dpi. These steps taken together solve 90% of the PDF print problems I encounter.

Hi,
I've just heard that some pdf files I created have had printing problems with non-breaking spaces on some printers.
I haven't seen the problem myself, but this is the gist:
Where a non-breaking space was used in the original Word document, the pdf looks fine on screen. But when printed, the space increases substantially so that some text gets thrown off the right side of the page. I'm told the printer concerned is an HP LaserJet 4V.
The files were orignaly made in Word 6.0 on a Mac, and distilled with Distiller 3.01, also on a Mac. The pdf files print fine to my HP LaserJet 4MP from my Mac and my NT machine using both postscript and non-postscript drivers. The files in question use Helvetica exclusively.
Has anyone had any similar experience? Is there a solution other than replacing all non-breaking spaces with regular spaces in the original documents. I don't really want to do this as I'm sure I put those non-breaking spaces in for a reason. (It was a long time ago :)) And please don't suggest that the people buy a new printer. I already suggested that, but they don't seem to have a sense of humor. :(
And do you know of any characters other than non-breaking spaces that might cause similar problems.
Best Wishes Dave Cragg
