I just wanted to let you all know that I've figured out what the problem was with Internet Explorer loading PDF files.
I *did* have Acrobat set as the Helper application in IE; what I *didn't* have was the "View with" option set to "View with Plug-in". Once I did that (and selected Reader as the plug-in) it worked perfectly.
Guess I'll never know why it worked just fine on my hard drive but not over the web but since it really doesn't matter ...
