This email follows up on the "opening to first page" "feature". There's a switch that needs to be turned off in the preferences so your cross-reference links/destinations actually go where they're supposed to. Here's the sequence: Edit/Preferences>/General.../then on the left side in the dialogue box click 'General'/under 'Miscellaneous' take the check out of 'Open cross-document links in same window' (it's checked by default). Your destination links will work correctly now. Also, when you pdf from Frame 7 and you want all your links to still work, ie. go to the exact place on a page, be sure to either save as pdf or 'generate Acrobat data' if printing to .ps (which in my opinion is unecessary, but that's just me) so when the dialogue box comes up you can click the 'Links' tab and check the box that reads, 'Create named destinations for all elements and paragraphs'. I'm not sure if all this has been covered before, but it's my two cents and I'm throwing them in the Acrobat pot hoping it keeps someone from making the same mistakes I did.

Windows > Destinations does not show named destinations until you click the Scan button (or select it from the context menu).

FrameMaker's newlink hypertext marker is converted to a PDF named destination, but it gets a "M8.newlink." prefix when you convert a single document to PDF (and a variation of it when you convert a book to .pdf).
For a consistent/reliable named destination, you can use the ConvertFMnewlink function in the FrameMaker-to-Acrobat TimeSavers add-on -- see http://www.microtype.com/showcase/ConvertFMnewlink.pdf for an example & more info (source .fm file is available in the Showcase section).
As to the original question (cross-file links in Acrobat 6), I would like to add that Acrobat 6 provides support for a "NewWindow" setting as part of the link properties. This setting can be applied to all links in a "main menu" PDF, for example, so that there is no need to rely on local preferences as controlled by end users. [ The "NewWindow" setting is also supported in previous Acrobat/Reader versions, but cannot be set through Acrobat's user interface ]

I found it impossible to export a PDF from ID2 that I could get to PDF/X. Well, I didn't try all that hard either, distilling was so easy.

Been doing it all day today, it's fast the results have been excellent.
