Glenn, you said:
Thanks for the clarification about OSX. Not being a heavy Mac user (I only
have one system with OS 8.x) I was not aware of this. It was my
understanding that V6 indexes could not be read by Acrobat 4 and 5 even if
the PDFs were 1.3 and 1.4 compatible on Windows systems. I am going to
prepare a test to verify this for myself. If it works then I'll install 6
and use it exclusively. Otherwise, I'll do all of my work in 6 and use 5 to
create the calalog index.

And I say:
If you've created an index in 6.x, anyone using 5.x or under will not be able to seach using the index. One can always do simple seachs for words within a single document, but if you have a CD with multiple documents for example, then the index will be useless unless the user has Reader/Acrobat 6.
I understand that a previous version of a program can't know what the next version is going to have, but for cryin' out loud, Adobe sure as heck can make sure that a particular function of the next version is compatible with the previous one. Especially regarding a feature that could be one of the only reasons someone might use Acrobat in the first place! And what's with the tedious and burdensome Destinations linking? Rememer the "Set Destination" button?
Between the index issue and destinations hack job, I still have 5 on my second computer to deal with 6's inadequacies. That seems to be more and more the SOP regarding power users who switched to 6. Nice workaround.

Thats like it always has been. The Acrobat team never give a d-d about
Mac users.... (ducking). Or at least that's our experience since years
back.

That is correct. v6 indices can't be read by any version of
Acrobat except 6. The files can, but the indices can not. The index
is a COMPLETELY SEPARATE file format - it's NOT PDF...

so is the answer here to create indices with Acro 4... for full
Mac/Windows access by users w/ Reader 4, 5 or 6?
Assuming the PDFs being indexed are at 1.3 PDF level.

Nope, that won't work either since users of Mac OS X
(regardless of Acrobat version) can NOT read Acrobat 4/5 indices.
There is NO WAY to create a single index file that can be
read by all version of Acrobat on all OS platforms.
You need two - one for Acrobat 4/5 and for Acrobat 6...

Can that be done on a CD?
