We're currently using Acrobat 6.0.4 Professional on Windows XP to publish our tech manuals on the Web. (Originals mostly in InDesign 2.0.2, a few still in PageMaker.) Generally we're still saving back to Reader 5 compatibility, although it's gotten to the point that even with that, a user with Reader 5 won't be able to open a lot of stuff and we advise them to upgrade Reader.
Some of our documents are more graphic-intensive than others, and in those cases some of our users in the field find that the time it takes to open a document is unacceptable.
Is this improved in Acrobat 7? is the compression better or anything like that? If we can tell the bean-counters upstairs that upgrading to 7 will improve usability in the field, they might approve the expenditure. :)
(the next challenge will be getting the bean-counters to approve the purchase of 6 copies of IDCS2... would that improve performance in the field too?)
And btw, I do push PDF Enhancer from time to time, but I think my supervisor thinks it's going to be hard enough to get approval to buy the current versions of the basic software, without trying for extras too. You may have heard in the news that times are tough in the airline industry?
