This may not apply, but did you select the index before running the search? To the right of the button for a usual non-indexed search is a button which should get a box headed 'Adobe Acrobat Search', with a button marked 'indexes'. Click this for a chance to select the index.
Then the buttons going right should show either the selection of documents or move to the next or previous occurance of the word.
Try starting with the help file and the word 'catalog' if only as this seems to work.
The advantage could be to publish data as directories. Even 4D on a Mac may not be obvious to all users.
